Qatar is currently upgrading its infrastructure to link Doha to other regions and countries, as well as preparing to swiftly transport freight and people during the FIFA World Cup Football in 2022. One of the projects under construction is the Doha Metro network, consisting of four metro lines (Red, Green, Gold and Blue line) with a total of 300 kilometers (186 mi.) of rail and 100 metro stations. By 2021, 600.000 travelers per day will use this metro system.
XSPlatforms has been chosen as one of the parties to provide fall protection systems for the metro stations, among which one of the world’s biggest metro stations. This is a real landmark and the central hub of the Doha Metro network and Qatar Rail network: Msheireb Metro Station. Another station that will have an XSPlatforms fall protection solution is Education City Metro Station.
Msheireb Metro Station
This station is the largest metro station in Doha and connects three of the four metro lines. Because this station is the most important of this metro system and lies at the heart of Doha, its design is modern and extravagant, so people will easily recognize it.
This extravagant design that reflects the heritage of the region, also brings challenges as it comes to developing a fall protection system to facilitate a safe working environment at height.
The Fall Protection solution
Together with main contractor CCC and the client we developed a custom fall protection solution for the Msheireb Metro Station, consisting of multiple solutions.
One XSLinked system with 500 meters (1.640 ft) of lifeline will be installed on the roof of the station. This is a standing seam roof, so XTrusion base plates are used. Furthermore, 18 RAP globes are installed to reach the inclining areas.
Also, three special stairs for access to the roof will be installed. These stairs have integrated abseil-points to reach the ‘louvers area’, located along the facade.
Education City Metro Station
The other station that will be equipped with XSPlatforms Fall Protection systems is the Education City Metro Station. This station is located at the outskirts of Doha and connects the center of the city with Education City, a 14 km2 (5,4 mi2) educational campus with educational facilities.
Just like the Msheireb station, its design is modern and extravagant and a custom fall protection system will be installed: one XSLinked horizontal lifeline system with XTrusion base plates for standing seam roofs, 250 meters (820 ft) of wire rope and 11 RAP Globe to facilitate rope access.
This is not the first fall protection project in Doha’s Education City: we already provided the state-of-the-art Qatar National Library with a custom fall protection system.
