Work at height poses safety risks, and so people should consciously take safety and protection measures to prevent them from meeting accidents and injuries. Here are five things you need to know when you want to work at height safely.

  1. Don’t underestimate the risks.
Always equip yourself with safety equipment when work at height. You do not have to be standing on really tall buildings before you should even think of safeguarding yourself. In fact, more accidents happen when people are at 2 meters high than when they are at 20 meters and above. Lower heights can make you feel safer so you underestimate safety risks. But don’t let this fool you!
  2. Always consider the safety rules and regulations enforced in your country.
Every country or region enforces relevant rules and regulations concerning working at heights. These rules are meant to protect and help you ensure your safety. It is important that you inform yourself of these so that you know firsthand the standards required for any safety equipment that you need to use. There are also international safety practices laid out by some agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) but more specific regulations are in place in particular countries. Be aware of the safety rules and standards in your country. We have an interesting checklist from OSHA available.
  3. Choose the right safety equipment.
The work-at-height market is teeming with varied safety equipment. Before you even make a purchase, determine what your situation is like and the nature of your activities. Questions such as: What is the type of work to be done? What type of building do you need to work on? How many people are working at height? These are only some of the factors that need to be considered. It would be even better to seek the advice of experts in this field.
  4. Use only approved and certified products.
Accidents and injuries from working at heights bring a lot of inconvenience and losses. You don’t want to be troubled by these so better to get equipment that has been certified and approved by international standards for safety and quality. Look for providers that give full support so you know how to properly clean and store the equipment. After purchasing and using one, be sure to regularly inspect and maintain it to keep it in optimum working condition at all times.
  5. Make sure you know how to use your equipment.
Sometimes injuries and accidents happen because people do not really know how to use their safety equipment. There are pieces which they do not know how to fasten or some are installed incorrectly. In order to avoid these mistakes, you have to be correctly educated about the equipment by getting adequate product training from its manufacturers or from training centers. Do not be afraid to ask questions on how to use the product.

Remember to consider good safety equipment to help you safely work at heights and be guided by these pointers. Do you have a thing or two to add to this list? Feel free to share it with us.

Thanks for pointing out that workers should take safety and protection measures to prevent accidents or injuries when working at heights. My husband is planning to take a second job at the construction site so we can pay our bills. I guess I should urge him to look for a CPO-approved working-at-heights training course on Monday to ensure his safety.
